A writer, designer, and illustrator, Kalman is the author of books for both adults and children, including And the Pursuit of Happiness and The Principles of Uncertainty, and her art has graced the pages and covers of many a New Yorker as well as books ranging from Strunk and White's The Elements of Style to Michael Pollan's Food Rules. Her latest project is an illustrated edition of Gertrude Stein's 1933 classic. In full color, these sixty-plus paintings—brimming with Kalman's signature whimsy and insight—don't merely complement the text but add a vital new dimension to the story, showing us Stein at her desk, following visitors such as Sylvia Beach and Man Ray, and bringing to life the unique modernist ferment that was 27 rue de Fleurus.
