Dedicated to beloved Civil Rights leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., this significant memorial highlights the struggles of the African-American community and King's dream of equal rights for all. King's "I Have a Dream" speech, notably delivered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, is a lasting testimony to his dedication to the Civil Rights movement. Visitors can look for text of the famous speech inscribed on the monument, see an immense, 30-foot carved stone likeness of King and relax in the peaceful setting overlooking the Tidal Basin.   • How do I get to the memorial?

    The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial is located adjacent to the FDR Memorial in West Potomac Park on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Situated between Independence Avenue and West Basin Drive, the memorial is easy to find. Visitors can walk, bike, ride public transportation, or drive to the monument. Limited on-street parking is available along Ohio Drive, SW.
  • Is there somewhere to buy some souvenirs nearby?

    Yes, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial bookstore is located adjacent to the memorial. Visitors will find an extensive collection of books, DVDs, posters and gifts that focus on the work, teachings and words of Martin Luther King, Jr. as well as African-American history and the work of other famous Civil Rights leaders from around the country and the world.
